Tom Fazio's
Arthur Hills'
As one of South Carolina’s premier private golf communities, Dataw Island is home to two 18-hole golf courses: Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course and Arthur Hills’ Morgan River course. Both are designed to ensure a pleasurable round for golfers of all abilities, with five sets of tees — play from the “Pro” tees or enjoy an adapted executive-length course with forward tees. Members enjoy beautiful natural surroundings as they wind their way through the island and amongst tidal marshland, live oaks dating back hundreds of years and Civil War era ruins–starting and ending at our Southern-style Clubhouse.
Dataw Island is pleased to employ four teaching pros, three of whom are fully certified PGA Class A Golf Professionals complemented by a highly qualified team, all of whom, take pride in their work–several of whom are also working toward their PGA Certification.
All members enjoy access to the Dataw practice facilities, including the driving range with unlimited complimentary balls and chipping and putting greens. Offerings include group and private lessons and clinics. A wide variety of tournaments are held throughout the year and are suited to include everyone from the novice to the expert golfer.
New golf members are acclimated quickly and easily through our frequently-offered Mens’ and Ladies’ Days, our very popular Dataw Island Golf Association and the Dataw Island Women’s Golf Association, plus golf clinics and events.
The Golf Pro Shop offers the latest in clothing and equipment. If you need to warm up before a community tournament, the practice range is open Tuesday through Sunday, 30 minutes prior to the first tee times, which range from 7:30 to 8:30 seasonally. Our golf professionals can be reached at (843) 838-8250 during Golf Pro Shop hours.
For the Cotton Dike course, Tom Fazio’s design choices were influenced by a series of dikes that were created to generate more planting ground for 18th century plantation cotton fields. Jenkins Creek flows by nearly half of the 18 holes, nestled between emerald fields and fairways.
“From a playability standpoint,” Fazio says, “the seventh hole offers numerous options as a three-shot hole or as a reachable par-five for long hitters, and if the golfer avoids the forest on the right and the lagoons on the left, a birdie is a distinct possibility.”
The Cotton Dike course was completely renovated in 2011, and plays better than ever, reclaiming its rightful place as one of the Lowcountry’s finest courses.

Golf architect Arthur Hills’ hallmark Scottish flair shines in the design of his signature Morgan River course. Demanding strategic excellence, a round on the course wanders through the dappled shade of massive oaks while you navigate water challenges that inspire novices and professionals alike. Here, an aqua-shaping technique allows aquatic plants to grow on the ponds, attracting wildlife to the links.
“In searching for the right adjective to describe the Morgan River course,” says Arthur Hills, “I came up with the word ‘delightful’. It’s a delightful golf course.”
Similar to Cotton Dike course, Morgan River was renovated in 2012, and it, too is regarded as one of the area’s finest courses.

We are pleased to announce that Chris Howard has been promoted to Director of Golf for Dataw Island Club. Previously serving as the Head Golf Professional, Chris had been serving as the Interim Director for the past three months while a comprehensive search was underway. More than 110 resumes were received for the position; this list was narrowed to eight semifinalist candidates who were interviewed by a combination of staff and Search Committee members. From there, we narrowed the field to three finalists for online and in-person interviews.
While we had a number of good candidate interview sessions with the Search Committee, Chris Howard performed extremely well during the interview process, describing his vision for continuous improvement for all department activities. During his three months as Interim Director, he implemented a number of positive changes and the department has run very well despite being shorthanded. His communications have been timely and informative; he has handled a number of delicate matters with grace and professionalism; he has considerable experience here and with other golf programs; and, he is already a PGA Class A professional and a gifted instructor. This all went a long way toward his success in the search process. Many thanks to the 19 members and industry professionals who wrote letters of recommendation for Chris and also to those who put in a good word in person.
When asked what were important attributes for the position, the Search Committee and senior staff had a number of answers. None were mentioned more frequently than the importance of proper communication and follow through. Also mentioned were visibility, professionalism, personability and approachability. Attention to detail was also discussed as was developing more of a member experience culture within the program and the staff. Chris demonstrates several of these attributes on a daily basis and gave excellent answers to how to improve upon all of them.
“Chris has proven over the last six years that he is equipped and ready for this responsibility,” says General Manager Ted Bartlett. “He has been instrumental in our tournament coordination, and is skilled at managing staff, assisting with operations, and assisting with the running the Pro Shop. I am confident in his ability to lead us into the future.”
“I have enjoyed working with the members, committees and staff, and look forward to increased engagement in my new role,” Chris Howard stated.
“Chris Fearn, and before him Dave Britton, developed some great programs and laid the groundwork for me to pick up where they left off – continuing to polish our processes and procedures, grow member engagement, and improve the overall member experience. I’m excited to formally accept this position and embrace my new role. Thank you, Dataw, for entrusting me to lead our team forward! I look forward to sharing my vision for Dataw golf in the near future.”
Originally from Ninety Six, South Carolina (outside of Columbia), Chris and his wife, Ashley, live in Bluffton with their daughters, Lacie (9), and Eleanor (6), where Ashley is an early childhood education teacher at Cross Schools.
