Welcoming John Wartman Dataw's New ARB Director
John brings a rare combination of hands-on construction expertise, leadership experience, and genuine appreciation for community character. His career spans more than two decades as Senior Vice President of a Southern California contracting firm, where he oversaw major building projects and developed a deep understanding of quality standards, materials, and design integrity. After relocating to Hawaii to care for his father, John continued his work in the industry with a custom high-end home builder, further sharpening his attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Although John has lived in places ranging from Minnesota to Syracuse to Hawaii, it was the Lowcountry that ultimately felt like home. About six years ago, he began regularly visiting the Beaufort and Charleston area, returning each year and feeling more connected with every trip. Last year, he decided it was time to make the move permanent. When he later came across the ARB Director position, he recognized immediately how well it matched both his professional background and his interest in community stewardship.
Outside of his work, John enjoys tennis, fishing, woodworking, and the arts – interests he shares with his wife, Sue, an accountant who continues to manage corporate returns for clients in Hawaii. Together, they love music, theater, and symphonies. Their blended family includes one son and two daughters.
Since arriving at Dataw, John has been struck by the kindness of the people here. “Every member I’ve met has been friendly and welcoming,” he says. “The community speaks for itself, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
Our soon to be former ARB Director, Carol Garrison, who has been assisting with his onboarding, shared high praise as well: “He’s doing a great job so far. He learns quickly, understands the role, and pays attention to detail. The ARB Board members already show appreciation for his talents and drive. He’ll be a great fit.”
