Dataw Community Unites for 10-Walk Series to Raise Parkinson's Awareness & Funds

Parkinson's Walk

Members of the Dataw Island community recently completed a remarkable 10-walk series to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease, rallying neighbors, friends, and families in support of a cause that touches many lives. Over 112 participants laced up their shoes, each walking more than 3 miles-surpassing the “Michael J. Fox Foundation’s 30 Mile Move Challenge” to demonstrate solidarity with those affected by Parkinson’s.The walks were not just about distance; they were about community, hope, and action. The events were coordinated on Dataw Island by Cindi Crane, who walks in memory of her father, Don Varner, whose life was  lost to Parkinson’s last year. Also among the walkers was Maryellen Sparno, a Dataw resident living with Parkinson’s, who, alongside others, inspired the group with her resilience and advocacy.Fundraising efforts were coordinated through Facebook pages and local check donations, collectively raising approximately $6,500 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Donations are still being accepted through the end of the month, with supporters encouraged to contribute via Facebook or by check, noting “Dataw/Cindi Crane” in the memo line for direct submission to the Foundation.

Quick Facts About Parkinson’s Disease

  • Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, with nearly 90,000 new diagnoses each year in the U.S.
  • The disease is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, leading to movement and mood symptoms
  • Common symptoms include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, and changes in posture and balance
  • Parkinson’s usually develops around age 65, but 1 in 10 people are diagnosed before age 45
  • There is currently no cure, but medications, therapies, and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life
  • Movement and exercise are proven to help manage symptoms and improve well-being for people with Parkinson’s

The Dataw walks exemplify how grassroots efforts can make a meaningful impact-raising funds for research, supporting those living with Parkinson’s, and fostering a sense of hope and community. Every step taken brings us closer to understanding, treating, and one day curing Parkinson’s disease. For more information please visit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research website.
