Dataw Island

Wildlife

From woodstorks to egrets, herons to spoonbills, Dataw Island is a birder’s delight!

Members annually take part inthe Great American Backyard Bird Count and the Christmas Bird Count, and numerous volunteers maintain the Purple Martin Houses, Blue Bird Boxes, the Butterfly Garden, and more.

Both golf courses are distinguished with Audobon Sanctuary Certification, and also participate in Monarchs in the Rough conservation ecology program.

Visit the Pritchard Eagle Cam to check in on some of our resident birds of prey, and also check out the osprey nests in the marsh edge.

The Dataw Island Conservancy is a must for all nature-lovers – whether you want to participate in the Natural Areas Management Plan, assist with the newsletter or fundraising, the 501(c)3 is one of the island’s three non-profits, complemented by the Dataw Historic Foundation and the Dataw Island Feline Foundation, who manages a local TNR program and looks out for local kitties.

The South Carolina Lowcountry is home to a varied array of wildlife, and we share our island with many birds, mammals, and reptiles – and our waters with even more species! From oyster beds to blue crabs, red drum to alligators – the area’s waterways range from freshwater to saltwater, hosting many species who call the area “home.”
