Dataw Island Conservancy announces publication of Ecology Guide

Dataw Island is one of 68 inhabited islands in Beaufort County. It comprises about 840 acres surrounded by tidal marshland, Jenkins Creek, and the Morgan River. There are many freshwater lakes and ponds on the island as well as nesting and brooding areas for a variety of transient and resident bird species.

We share this island with a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and other kinds of wildlife. In order to coexist in harmony with these wondrous creatures we must both respect their place on our island and protect their natural nesting and breeding places, to enjoy nature without endangering their survival.

Many of our residents have come here from cities and have had little exposure to the indigenous birds, plants, and animals of the Lowcountry. Certainly, most have never lived in such close proximity to them. The goal of this guide is to educate our residents to the role they play in order to fully protect and appreciate this natural paradise.

The Dataw Island Conservancy invites members to “go green” and view a copy online by clicking here (it is printable, as well!)

Thank you to the many volunteers who produced the Guide, and to the Ecology Committee of Callawassie for generously sharing their guide with us.
