2020 Best of the Best in Planned Communities: Dataw Island again named Best Golf Community

BEAUFORT, SC --- ideal-LIVING magazine has named Dataw Island, just outside of Historic Beaufort, SC, for two years running a “Best Golf Community” in their annual “Best of the Best” awards.

“The ‘Best of the Best’ feature honors those areas and communities which deserve special recognition for their outstanding qualities, facilities, and programs,” said ideal-LIVING’s editor and associate publisher Kelly Godbey.

Dataw Island has shown continued dedication to delivering a world-class golf experience to its members and guests while also being a responsible steward of natural resources. Brian Hollingsworth, the Director of Golf Maintenance for the community’s two courses, maintains both 18-hole golf courses as Audubon Sanctuary-certified and has developed a water stewardship program that includes use of captured rainwater and effluent water.

“We are blessed with a gorgeous natural backdrop here in the Lowcountry,” says Hollingsworth, “and our team is committed to preserving that beauty not just for this generation but for many to follow. We are proud of our environmental accomplishments and are grateful for the recognition as one of the ‘Best of the Best.’”

Hollingsworth oversees both Tom Fazio’s “Cotton Dike” course and Arthur Hills’ “Morgan River” course. Both renovated and with brand new cart paths, they are uniquely-designed to ensure a pleasurable round for golfers of all abilities, as they wind gently through tidal marshland, beautiful natural vistas, and live oaks dating back hundreds of years.

Throughout the events of the last few months, the dedication of the Dataw Island Golf Maintenance staff and inside staff have assured that members were able to get some much-needed fresh air and a break from stressful times. With modifications such as single-rider carts, no bunker rakes, and modified cups to make it easier to retrieve your ball without having to pull the pin, Dataw Island actually increased the number of rounds year-over-year, at a time when many golf courses were shuttered.

“Dataw Island is a community in the true sense of the word,” said Director of Golf Dave Britton. “Our members have been very respectful and understanding, even when they’ve had to wait for a cart – something we are not accustomed to here, as we normally don’t require single riders.”

Britton and his team even designed a “Putt Putt” course available to all members, whether they are golfers or not. “We just saw an opportunity to serve members and figured, ‘Let’s get out there and build something that will be fun for them.’” The result recycled props from past member-guests events, and was a hit with members.

“The putt putt course and challenges were a lot of fun and a great distraction from our everyday routine,” said member John Keet, a non-golfing member who came out to enjoy the event. “The social distancing was followed very closely and it only took 30-45 minutes so it was easy to fit into whatever else you were doing. The best part is that there is no cost to participate and you can do it even if you don’t have a golf package. It was a blast!”

Dataw Island also offers its members a tennis facility recognized as an “Outstanding Private Tennis Facility” by the United States Tennis Association, croquet lawns unrivaled in the region, bocce, kayaking, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness facility with a yoga, onsite physical therapy, and spa services, as well as social and philanthropic clubs and organizations too numerous to mention. The community recently purchased and completely overhauled the Dataw Island Marina, and has pickleball courts in the works. The community is also the steward of a 33 acre maritime forest nature preserve with deep water dock and dog enclosure

For more than 25 years, ideal-LIVING magazine has been a leading national publication for readers who are nearing retirement age or who are interested in the benefits of relocating their families or businesses. On their announcement online, ideal-LIVING wrote, “Planned communities have increased in popularity over the last 25 years and continue to do so each year….The conceptualizing, planning, designing, and developing of a community ensures that homeowners’ needs will be met. The developers not only create an environment conducive to a healthy, happy lifestyle, but they also create a real sense of community where residents can enjoy new friends and make new memories. It’s a place where you can find unity of body, mind, and spirit.”

Dataw Island is a fantastic place to find that unity of body, mind, and spirit. For more information or to schedule a tour, please visit www.Dataw.com or call (843)838-3838. With real estate options ranging from the $200s to over a million, and flexible membership programs (including membership to accommodate multi-generational households and even for those living off-island), you will want to “short-list” Dataw Island, truly one of South Carolina’s hidden gems.
