City of Beaufort Mayor Stephen Murray spoke Monday on Dataw Island, as a guest of the Government and Community Relations Committee. Although not within the city limits, many Dataw Islanders consider Beaufort our “hometown” and were interested to hear the Mayor’s thoughts and plans for our beloved city.

 

He spoke about the Tech Corridor and our Cyber Security Education program, economic development, housing development (and the struggles and growing pains), preservation, and more.

 

Mayor Murray also shared some very interesting statistics: did you know that there are only 14,000 residents of the City of Beaufort? And, the average income per capita is just under $30,000 a year, with the average age 38. However, we are losing about 40% of our young adults who migrate from the area – but thankfully we are also seeing some younger people move in.

 

And the hot question? Yes, Harris Teeter is still “on the table”...but a timeline is not yet known.
