Dataw Island, S.C. – The 5th TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate Tournament teed off today on Dataw Island, with players from 15 colleges and universities from around the country battling wind and rain in unseasonably-cold South Carolina.

The intercollegiate tournament features both men’s and ladies’ golf, in what is the season-opener for many of the participating schools. The players compete on Dataw’s Cotton Dike and Morgan River courses: Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills’ designs that also play host to the South Carolina Open and the CGA Senior Amateur.

“We look forward to the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate tournament every year,” Ted Bartlett, Dataw Island Club General Manager said. “The students are very talented and it is our pleasure to host their tournament.”

Dataw Island Club members are also enthusiastic event hosts, volunteer their time, skills, and in many cases – their homes, putting student athletes up onsite.

“They are great kids and they’re so much fun to have around,” says Dataw member Barbara Carakostas. “We enjoyed it so much the first year that we have since made it a point to arrange the rest of our schedule around the tournament.”

In addition to housing the students (and feeding them, and offering laundry service…and so much more!) members get involved in myriad ways. Some volunteer to shuttle the athletes from green to tee on some of farther holes while others bake cookies. Some played in Sunday’s College Am while others came out to the barbecue to show their support.

“The kids are so appreciative of the hospitality,” Carakostas added. “Plus,” she added with a twinkle in her eye, “who doesn’t love the students’ enthusiasm about life and hope for the future?”

The tournament continues tomorrow, with the men teeing off at 9:00 am on Cotton Dike and the women teeing off at 10:00 am on Morgan River. Viewing is open to the public, to track your favorite players online using BirdieFire (birdiefire.com/tournament) and also search for the event hashtags on social media: #tmagdataw and #tmag17.
