Five-Hole Playoff for the WSCGA Am. Championship
While Mickelsen may be vying for the grand slam this weekend, all eyes locally were on Dawn Woodard, who set a record today at the Dataw Island Club by winning the Women’s South Carolina Amateur Championship title for the eighth time. The previous record was set by Caroline Cudone and has stood since 1976. The competition this week was fierce, with Woodard and Hilton Head Prep’s rising-senior Sophia Burnett edging out two-day leader Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill Country Club for a tie at +1. The two duked it out in a nail-biter playoff that went a full five holes before Woodard sunk a birdie putt for the win on the 18th of Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course. Woodard, of Thornblade Club in Greer, SC, has a background in sports psychology and has extensively studied self-awareness and how it affects a player’s game of golf. It seems Woodard herself has embraced a balance in competition and life. When asked what’s next, she said “I’m going to go home, and be a mom. I’ll go back to doing what I was doing before and every other day. Don’t get me wrong, I love to win, but I REALLY hate to lose! But at the end of the day, it’s just golf.” Burnett, of Colleton River Club, has committed to Furman and also to coming back for many years of competition. Her sister, Camila, is a sophomore at Hilton Head Prep and took home the Mytrice Riccoboni Trophy for the best net score and also looks forward to coming back. “It was a lot of fun,” Sophia Burnett told WSCGA Director Clarissa Childs. “Thanks so much for having us. We definitely look forward to being part of the WSCGA for a long time!” The three-day tournament also included a State Championship, won by Pickens Country Club’s Pam Prescott. A solid leader for all three days of play, Prescott posted an impressive 225 total gross, an 18-point lead over second place winner Renee Rezzetano, of Hampton Hall, and just two strokes behind in third place was former LPGA pro Suzy Ellison, of Woodlands Country Club. The Women’s South Carolina Golf Association (WSCGA) exists to promote and serve the best interests of women’s golf in South Carolina. Founded in 1949, the non-profit WSCGA membership is made up of more than 275 South Carolina Golf Clubs with more than 14,000 women golfers receiving GHIN handicaps. Recognized throughout the United States as one of the premiere Women’s Golf Associations in the country, WSCGA upholds traditions, policies, and high values in regard to the great game of golf. Day Two - Competition Continues!
Day two of the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship and State Division Championships at Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike course has drawn to a soggy close, with another day of excellent competition despite on-again, off-again showers throughout the day. With a total of nearly 8 inches of rain being reported over the course of less than a week, pond levels are high and the greens are rolling slow. Clarissa Childs, WSCGA Director, was thankful to not have lightning delays today despite the many systems the skirted around Dataw Island. “We’ve been joking that Dave Britton, Dataw’s Director of Golf, is Moses today! We can’t believe how lucky we’ve been that the thunderstorms have all seemed to pass right by us. It’s like he has parted the skies for us to play through.” Surprisingly, the players even enjoyed some spurts of sun between the showers, and they did not seem to allow the rain to dampen their spirits as the continued the fight to the top spots in South Carolina. In the Amatuer Championship field, it’s 1, 2, 3 over par in first, second, and third places. Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill Country Club) continues to lead the Amateur Championship field shooting 73 today for a two-day total of one-over par, just one stroke ahead of second place. Dawn Woodard (Thornblade Club) shot a 72 to close the gap to just one stroke, with a two-day total of two-over par. And in third, at three-over-par, is Sophia Burnett (Colleton River Club) who also shot a 72. Pam Prescott (Pickens Country Club) held onto the lead today in the State Division Championship, shooting a 73 for a two-day total of eight-over par. Renee Rezzetano (Hampton Hall) also maintained her slot in second-place, with 14-over. Leigh Coulter (Ft. Jackson Country Club) slid to 5th, with Natalie Huff (Woodlands) and Suzy Ellison (Woodlands Country Club) moving up to hold a third place tie. CGA Four-Ball Championship
Between Green Jackets and Plaid…The 51st Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship. The Masters is completed and the Heritage is just warming up…what will golf enthusiasts do this week? Dataw Island is hosting the Carolinas Golf Association’s 51st Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship on Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course. Half the field took teed off this this morning and the other half plays this afternoon. After round two tomorrow, the field will be cut to 30 plus ties. Four Dataw Island members are competing, as well as a number of players from Hilton Head, Okatie, and throughout both North and South Carolina. Representing Dataw Island are Steve Dietz, Jim Dufresne, Doug McGowan, and Jim Wertz. They played this morning and will play again tomorrow afternoon. Other in-country competitors are: from Hilton Head, Kevin Arnold, Marcus Byler, Mark Carey, Robert Fulton, Steve Murphy, and David Politi; from Okatie, JR Evans, Chris Morris, Michael Teem, and Joseph Roller. Be sure to come out and support them and the other talented competitors! Schedule of rounds: Monday, April 15 Round 1 - Tee times off #1 and #10 tees (8:00AM/12:30PM) Tuesday, April 16 Round 2 - Tee times off #1 and #10 tees (8:00AM/12:30PM) Cut to low 30 teams and ties Wednesday, April 17 Round 3 - Tee times off #1 and #10 (8:00AM) Awards ceremony following play at scoreboard Sides to watch: • Defending Champions Stan Sill of Spartanburg, S.C. and Mike Gravley of Greer, S.C. came from behind last year to claim the title be three shots over their nearest competitors. The win marked the first CGA title for both competitors. They'll look to add to that total when they defend the title this year at Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike course. • The back-to-back championship team of James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C. and Jim Grainger of Charlotte, N.C. are teaming back up to reclaim the magic they had when they won the title in 2016 and 2017. The duo did not play together in last year's championship and missed the opportunity for the three-peat. A win this year would spell redemption for the two-time Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Champs. • Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, N.C. come in hot off a win at the N.C. Super Senior Four-Ball Championship in March. Simson and Detweiler are three-time winners of this event (2008, 2010, 2012). • Kelly Stimart of Charlotte, N.C. and Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C. won their first CGA Senior Four-Ball Championship as a team last year at the 18th N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C. The duo has plenty of firepower to take down this tougher field that includes the best senior four-ball teams in both North and South Carolina. • Four-time CGA champion Walter Todd, Sr. of Laurens, S.C. and two-time South Carolina Senior Champion Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C. finished in eighth place in this event last year. Hendley is the reigning Carolinas Senior Amateur Champion. •

Veterans Compete to Represent the USA
A group of wounded veterans enjoyed a practice round today in preparation for tomorrow’s qualifying round at Dataw Island, in which they will compete for a coveted spot on the Simpson Cup team, a Ryder Cup-style event produced annually by the On Course Foundation in which wounded and disabled American veterans compete against their British counterparts. This year, 56 golfers are competing in qualifiers around the country to earn one of five spots on the team. Saturday at 9:00 am, Col. Glenn Blackburn will make the ceremonial first shot on the Tom Fazio-designed Cotton Dike course at Dataw Island, and competition is expected to be tough. “There are some fantastic competitors playing at Dataw this week,” Whitmore said. “This course is one of the most challenging qualifiers and some of the strongest players are here to compete. The course has a lot of tooth, a lot of yardage. I tell the guys not to let the yardage fool them; a long shot won’t take the place of quality golf shots.” When asked why they would choose to compete in one of the harder qualifiers, Whitmore admitted that the “tour-like” conditions of the course are a big draw, but even more appealing are the members and staff who make the experience one they look forward to every year. “We really feel like we are coming home to family when we come to Dataw. We are treated like family, like royalty actually, and we truly appreciate Dataw members.” And, members share the sentiment. With a large contingency of veterans living on the island, along with civilians who are avid supporters of our military, it is no wonder the gentlemen from the On Course Foundation feel so welcomed. “These men have made an incredible sacrifice,” said Dataw Island member Dave Luzzi, himself a veteran. “Dataw Island is honored to be given this wonderful opportunity to open our doors in support of service members. It’s also great to look at these guys and see camaraderie and competition shine through the game of golf.” ## The On Course Foundation supports the rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service-members and veterans through the medium of golf. While their main goal is to offer work placements and opportunities to service personnel and veterans suffering from physical and mental injuries, they also offer comprehensive golf tuition from their training professionals. Their reasons for doing so are simple – they believe that the sport of golf offers members a way to socialize and compete healthily, thereby improving confidence as well as physical and mental strength. Dataw Island is a gated golf, tennis and boating lifestyle community located fifteen minutes outside of historic downtown Beaufort. The island features two recently-renovated golf courses by designers Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills, a tennis center, a community center with workout and massage facilities, three restaurants, world class croquet lawns, bocce, kayaking, and more. The community has also been ranked the number one best
