SCGA Amateur Championship Day Two Wrap-up: Carter Cruises to the Top of the Leaderboard

Beaufort, SC - Youth vs. experience has been the mantra of recent memory for the annual battle of the South Carolina Golf Association's Amateur Championship and the opening round proved to keep that alive. Lingering clouds and spots of weather ultimately interrupted play for just under two hours, yet proved to be no issue for players as many opened the first round of the championship in red numbers at Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike Course.

Jumping out in front, carding a front nine score of five under par 30, Jake Carter of Aiken finds himself in the lead after round one. Recently qualifying for the US Amateur Championship, which will take place at Pebble Beach August 13-19, Carter has strung together some consistent rounds this summer. Crediting the putter today, Carter posted nine birdies and an eagle in his surge to the top. When asked about his approach for tomorrow as he holds the lead, the Florida State rising junior says, "it's the same mind thought as today, hit fairways and make some putts."

Just two shots off the lead and hungry to stay in contention is Columbia's William Harwood. Harwood, a rising junior at Elon University, would post a five under par, 66 to shuffle his way into contention. Also posting a five under par 66, is Ben Karns of Johns Island. Karns, who started on the tenth hole, got off to a simple start and then turned it on as he headed to his back nine, carding four birdies on the first four holes.

Lingering just three shots behind are Logan Sowell (Kershaw), Robert Lutomski (Simpsonville) and Ryan Marter (Columbia).
