Tyrese Jones wins “Jonathan Peck Skills for Life” award
Beaufort High School Football met on Dataw Island to celebrate a winning season, with varsity going 8-4 and JV 8-1. Although the entire teams worked hard for these wins, one team member, Tyrese Jones, was additionally recognized for his leadership both on and off the field. Jones was presented the inaugural “Jonathan Peck Skills for Life” award Wednesday at the Beaufort High School Football Banquet, held annually at Dataw Island. Three-hundred BHS players, coaches, school administrators, families, and Dataw members gathered in the Carolina Ballroom for a banquet and dinner hosted by Dataw Island members. The private gated community and Beaufort High School Athletics have a special connection – many members enjoy supporting our local student athletes attend games to cheer on their home crowd and offer their support to these students. Each spring, the members pool resources to host the BHS Football Banquet. Dataw member and football supporter Marilyn Peck advised and encouraged the student athletes during the awards presentation, congratulating them on an excellent season and encouraging them to reflect with gratitude. “You could not have accomplished what you did without the help of your parents, teachers, coaches and friends, so please take the time to thank every one of them.” Peck went on to recognized the students’ hard work, saying, “Success is not reserved for the talented. It is not in the high IQ. Not in the gifted birth. Not in the best equipment. Not even in ability. Success is almost totally dependent upon drive, focus, and persistence. The energy required to make an extra effort or try another approach? THAT is the secret.” Peck’s late husband, Jonathan Peck, was also an avid football supporter and this year an award named in is honor was introduced, the Jonathan Peck Skills for Life Award. The Award recognizes an outstanding student athlete who exemplifies the traits that Jon Peck held dear, on and off the field: a positive attitude, ability to get along with everyone, spirituality, appearance, communication skills, and having a plan for improving themselves in academics and in life. Tyrese Jones, the 2017 winner of the Jonathan Peck Skills for Life Award, is an exceptional yoing man with plans to join the US Air Force after graduation. Congratulations, Tyrese, for winning this prestigious award!
