Dataw Island Hosts Volunteer Expo
Today, Dataw Island hosted the Inaugural Volunteer Expo for local organizations to come and recruit additional help. Representatives from 28 local non-profit organizations set up in the Carolina Ballroom to welcome a crowd of about 200 “Datawites,” who tend to be a very philanthropic group by nature. For many Dataw residents community service defines life, and our Beaufort-area not-for-profit organizations are often the beneficiaries of this philanthropy. Whether it’s protecting the turtles, providing healthcare to the indigent, supplying food to the poor, keeping Hunting Island a special place to visit, reading to kids, or any of many other acts of generosity and community action, these organizations and the special people on the front lines make our community a wonderful place to live. The Volunteer Expo was designed to help connect these organizations with additional volunteers and to help members find suiting organizations in which to get involved. “People can get tired of doing the same thing after a while,” said attendee Cathy Crocker, who also served on the planning committee. “This is a great way for the organizations to recruit new people, and for our members to find new opportunities.” Jennifer Jenkins, who was representing the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center, agreed. “We are always looking for more volunteers, and there are not many opportunities like this Expo. We were thrilled to be invited!” The event was coordinated by – you guessed it – a group of volunteers. Dataw Island members Cathy Crocker, Roberta Reynes, Woody Rutter, and Betty Huntley and their committee would like to thank all of the organizations for participating and for the great services they provide.
