Pool Reflections: Evolution of the Dataw Island Pool

Since the late 1980’s Dataw Island has had a wonderful pool and concession stand overlooking Jenkins Creek. It was a pool area that members and locals alike enjoyed immensely. I swam and ate there as a child myself, growing up in Beaufort. Like all things, time and the elements took their toll, and a full renovation was in order.

It was time for a change - and luckily, I got to be a part of rebuilding something I had enjoyed as a kid. My part was small compared with the overall scope but it was a great opportunity.

We tried to make the most consistent and self sustaining kitchen on the property. The crew that came together to run it has done an excellent job and has made an amazing place for future generations.

I think the pool and concession stand represent the ideas of the staff and management going forward. Things are changing and we have a new direction with quality and consistency being the leading themes. It starts with the concession stand and will lead to all areas of food and beverage operations on Dataw Island.

We will stumble from time to time but the next few years are going to be very exciting and I’m glad to be a part of it. We hope we can see the entire club progress in the same direction.
