Leashes of Valor
“Valor is defined as courage in the face of extreme danger, often during combat,” Bowers says. “We developed Leashes of Valor to honor this valor and help heal through love. In fact, we like to use the acronym of LoV (or ‘love’) for Leashes of Valor. That’s really what the Valor family provides to veterans, a little love. They’ve shown the valor, and we are showing the love.”

CGA Four-Ball Championship
Between Green Jackets and Plaid…The 51st Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship. The Masters is completed and the Heritage is just warming up…what will golf enthusiasts do this week? Dataw Island is hosting the Carolinas Golf Association’s 51st Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship on Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course. Half the field took teed off this this morning and the other half plays this afternoon. After round two tomorrow, the field will be cut to 30 plus ties. Four Dataw Island members are competing, as well as a number of players from Hilton Head, Okatie, and throughout both North and South Carolina. Representing Dataw Island are Steve Dietz, Jim Dufresne, Doug McGowan, and Jim Wertz. They played this morning and will play again tomorrow afternoon. Other in-country competitors are: from Hilton Head, Kevin Arnold, Marcus Byler, Mark Carey, Robert Fulton, Steve Murphy, and David Politi; from Okatie, JR Evans, Chris Morris, Michael Teem, and Joseph Roller. Be sure to come out and support them and the other talented competitors! Schedule of rounds: Monday, April 15 Round 1 - Tee times off #1 and #10 tees (8:00AM/12:30PM) Tuesday, April 16 Round 2 - Tee times off #1 and #10 tees (8:00AM/12:30PM) Cut to low 30 teams and ties Wednesday, April 17 Round 3 - Tee times off #1 and #10 (8:00AM) Awards ceremony following play at scoreboard Sides to watch: • Defending Champions Stan Sill of Spartanburg, S.C. and Mike Gravley of Greer, S.C. came from behind last year to claim the title be three shots over their nearest competitors. The win marked the first CGA title for both competitors. They'll look to add to that total when they defend the title this year at Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike course. • The back-to-back championship team of James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C. and Jim Grainger of Charlotte, N.C. are teaming back up to reclaim the magic they had when they won the title in 2016 and 2017. The duo did not play together in last year's championship and missed the opportunity for the three-peat. A win this year would spell redemption for the two-time Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Champs. • Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, N.C. come in hot off a win at the N.C. Super Senior Four-Ball Championship in March. Simson and Detweiler are three-time winners of this event (2008, 2010, 2012). • Kelly Stimart of Charlotte, N.C. and Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C. won their first CGA Senior Four-Ball Championship as a team last year at the 18th N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C. The duo has plenty of firepower to take down this tougher field that includes the best senior four-ball teams in both North and South Carolina. • Four-time CGA champion Walter Todd, Sr. of Laurens, S.C. and two-time South Carolina Senior Champion Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C. finished in eighth place in this event last year. Hendley is the reigning Carolinas Senior Amateur Champion. •

adidas Intercollegiate Final Results
College athletes, guests, and Dataw Island spectators enjoyed an exciting finish to the annual adidas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, with a three-way tie for Men’s Individual play. After three rounds on Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course, Colin Uecker of Texas Lutheran, Michael Barber of Millikin University, and Casey Leebrick of York College each finished even par, forcing a two-hole shoot-out. Uecker secured the win with a birdie on the first playoff hole on hole #9, sending Barber and Leebrick to play #9 yet again, where Leebrick shot par and secured second place. The women competed on Arthur Hills’ Morgan River course where we saw some very competitive golf. Kim Siercks of Indiana Tech finished first with a score of +9, followed by Jordan Koller of York College with a +11, and in third, Vicky Raffle, also of Indiana Tech shot +15. Indiana Tech also showed strength in the team competition, securing first place with an overall score of +71. The ladies of York College finished not far behind at +76, and in third, Mt. St. Joseph posted +134. In Men’s team competition, Oglethorpe College finished in first place at their first appearance at the adidas Intercollegiate, with a team total of +19. The men of Hampden-Sydney College trailed by only three strokes, securing second place at +22. Third place went to North Carolina Wesleyan, who finished at +33. The adidas Intercollegiate is hosted by Ohio Wesleyan and featured a total of 105 athletes from 17 schools in the men’s division and 43 athletes representing seven schools competed in the women’s division. Each year, members of Dataw Island look forward to this tournament and hosting the college athletes in their homes. Many students return year after year, with the host families eagerly awaiting their return, much like a homecoming. In fact, when one of “their” students placed second, two members jokingly argued for a piece of the credit: “She stayed at MY house!” “Yeah, well she ate MY brisket!” bantered Cynthia Hooper and Anthony Russo. “These kids are great,” added Russo. “It’s a lot of fun to have them around and we really enjoy it.” The Dataw Staff also enjoys this annual event. Dave Britton, Dataw’s Director of Golf, is himself from Ohio and really enjoys hosting the student athletes and their coaches. “We just love that we are able to offer our courses to these student athletes each year,” said Britton. “Many of their home courses are just thawing now, and to be able to get out and play on such fine courses in the condition that Dataw is in is a real treat for them, especially this early in the season.” Although Britton at least partially credits the course conditions for attracting an impressive field each year, he also said that the camaraderie between the members and the athletes is at least as big of a draw. “It’s really neat to see our members’ excitement about hosting kids, baking for them, offering shuttles on the course – they ‘get it’ that this is a volunteer
