Dataw's Cotton Dike Course Ranks in South Carolina's 50 Best Courses
Every two years, a panel of industry, media and golfing professionals, representing a diverse range of occupations, handicaps and backgrounds travel all over South Carolina identifying the best of the 474 golf courses. Rankings are derived from a number of factors including: - Routing – How the course flows from hole to hole in harmony with existing topography. - Variety – Degree to which the course demands a full range of shot requirements. - Strategy – How design features test course management. - Equity – The course’s capacity to reward good shots and penalize poor ones. - Memorability – The distinctiveness of the golf course and its individual holes. - Aesthetics – The degree to which scenery and surrounds lend to the enjoyment. - Experience – Incorporates all elements of the course: practice areas, clubhouse and more. The objective of the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel is to promote excellence in SC golf course design and operations through competitive rankings, education and public advocacy. The Panel serves as an ambassador for golf in South Carolina by striving to stimulate and facilitate the promotion and marketing of outstanding golf courses, resorts and real estate developments. To obtain a rating, Dataw Island was required to solicit 15 panel members to come out and play both the Cotton Dike and Morgan River courses – a deliberate process that has taken nearly two years to complete. “We reached out to the SC Golf Course Ratings Panel in 2014 and have been working ever since to try and achieve a ranking,” Ted Bartlett, Dataw Island General Manager said. Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike course is a recently renovated Tom Fazio design that has hosted the 2015 CGA Senior Amateur, the 2015 South Carolina Open and is slated to host the 2016 South Carolina Open this year, along with many other amateur and professional events. The course is lushly appointed with Live Oak trees, impeccable landscaping and stunning marsh views that give it a uniquely LowCountry feel. “Dataw was pleased to make the list at number 50 and looks forward to the chance to improve our ranking going forward,” Bartlett said. “Now that we have achieved a rating for Cotton Dike our hope is that we will be able to receive a rating for Morgan River as well.”

Golf Divot Repair - Keep it playable!
Correctly fixing ball marks is the responsibility all golfers share. Ideally, everyone should try to fix their own ball mark, but if you see one that needs to be fixed – please fix two. If you would approach your ball from the same direction as your ball’s original flight – regardless of where you park your golf cart, it is often easier to see the ball mark and at the same time survey your putting line. There are two links provided that show different aspects of fixing ball marks. We found this very helpful video, which shows how to fix a ball mark using the newer pitch-mark repair tool we have in the Pro Shop, and thought we would share.

Addressing the Ball: 5 Tips to Sharpen your Golf Game
How we address the ball is often the forgotten reason why our game can go sour. The important address position has several components, any one of which can lead to some mechanical problems in the swing if not dealt with correctly. Here’s a brief reminder of five of the most common ones. The grip: It’s our only contact with the golf club and probably has the greatest effect on the position of the clubface. A poor grip can also affect our ability to make our best swing. The stance: Our stance should be the width which will allow us to make an athletic and balanced swing. Having our feet spread equal to the width of our shoulders is a good starting point. The width of our stance can also be very important in our ability to turn our body as we swing the club. Too wide and we limit our turn; too narrow and we can spin out. The alignment: Find our target, then make sure our feet, hips and shoulders are aligned in a similar direction toward our target. The posture: Our posture can affect our balance as well as the path of which we swing our club. Think of the weight on our feet as being under the top of our shoelaces. A slight knee flex and a bend at the waist/hips will allow our arms to hang down from our shoulders in a relaxed position. This will help us make a more natural and comfortable swing. The ball position: This is the final address item on our checklist. Generally for full swings, the ball position for the short irons is in the middle of the stance and moves forward to the front heel/instep for the woods. Each player might find slight variations work better for their individual games. Here’s an interesting fact I read about a few years ago. When a pro tour player takes a lesson, 75% of the time the lesson revolves around the address position. If the best players in the world spend most of their time in this area, maybe we should too!
