LOWCOUNTRY GOLF
Enjoy 36 holes of world-class golf designed by Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills.
As one of South Carolina’s premier golf communities, Dataw Island is home to two 18-hole golf courses: Tom Fazio’s Cotton Dike course and Arthur Hills’ Morgan River course. Both recently-renovated, and both designed to ensure a pleasurable round for golfers of all abilities. Golfers enjoy beautiful natural surroundings as they wind their way through the island and amongst tidal marshland, live oaks dating back hundreds of years and Civil War era ruins – starting and ending at our Southern-style Clubhouse.
The Dataw Island golf professionals are highly qualified and take pride in their work. All members enjoy access to the Dataw practice facilities, including the driving range and chipping and putting greens. Offerings include group and private lessons and clinics. A wide variety of tournaments are held throughout the year and are suited to include everyone from the novice to the expert golfer.
New golf members are acclimated quickly and easily through our frequently-offered Mens' and Ladies' Days, our very popular Dataw Island Golf Association and the Dataw Island Women's Golf Association, plus golf clinics and events.
The Golf Pro Shop offers the latest in clothing and equipment. If you need to warm up before a community tournament, the practice range is open 7:45 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Our golf professionals can be reached at (843) 838-8250 during Golf Pro Shop hours.

Arthur Hills' Morgan River course:
- Cotton Dike
For the Cotton Dike course, Tom Fazio's design choices were influenced by a series of dikes that were created to generate more planting ground for 18th century plantation cotton fields. Jenkins Creek flows by nearly half of the 18 holes, nestled between emerald fields and fairways.
“From a playability standpoint,” Fazio says, “the seventh hole offers numerous options as a three-shot hole or as a reachable par-five for long hitters, and if the golfer avoids the forest on the right and the lagoons on the left, a birdie is a distinct possibility.”
The Cotton Dike course was completely renovated in 2011, and plays better than ever, reclaiming its rightful place as one of the Lowcounty’s finest courses.

- Morgan River
Golf architect Arthur Hills’ hallmark Scottish flair shines in the design of his signature Morgan River course. Demanding strategic excellence, a round on the course wanders through the dappled shade of massive oaks while you navigate water challenges that inspire novices and professionals alike. Here, an aqua-shaping technique allows aquatic plants to grow on the ponds, attracting wildlife to the links.
“In searching for the right adjective to describe the Morgan River course,” says Arthur Hills, “I came up with the word 'delightful'. It’s a delightful golf course.”
Similar to Cotton Dike course, Morgan River was renovated in 2012, and it, too is regarded as one of the area’s finest courses.

DIRECTOR OF GOLF
|
|
Chris Fearn is the Director of Golf at Dataw Island, where he enjoys teaching and supporting charity, particularly Veterans organizations.
Chris came to Dataw Island as the First Assistant Pro and has worked his way up through the ranks as he has gained the PGA certifications and the love and trust o four membership. Prior to his current employment, Chris assisted members with setting up tee times, tournament results and providing lessons at Palmetto Hall Plantation Club. With his golf game showing a good deal of promise, Chris left Palmetto Hall and spent a short time on the Hooters Tour playing professionally before returning to Ohio for a short stint. His experience is diverse, as he has also served as the supervising foreman of the landscaping and mowing crews for TRU Cut Landscaping in his hometown of Fredricktown, Ohio.
Chris has considerable amount of volunteer experience serving as a coordinator for the Qualifiers Tournament, where he organized tee times, worked as a starter, rules official, player's assistant and player's caddy. He has further volunteer experience as a fire fighter, assistant instructor for children's putting clinics and as a standard bearer at the Verizon Heritage. His love of the Lowcountry has been driving him to return to the Beaufort area.
With a degree in professional golf management from the Professional Golfers Career College in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and experience with the JC Video Motion Analysis Software, Chris is an asset to our professional golfing team on Dataw. He is also experienced in re-gripping and re-shafting golf clubs.
|
Dataw Island is pleased to welcome back Chris Howard as First Assistant Golf Professional.
Chris (or “Howie” as many call him) is returning to us after a six-year stint at the May River Golf Club, at Montage Palmetto Bluff. At Palmetto Bluff, Chris enjoyed teaching members with the assistance of the Trackman Software tool, conducting tournaments, performing club repair and managing the daily operations. Palmetto Bluff’s devotion to training in customer service helped Chris polish his hospitality skills while also giving him an enormous amount of professional experience.
Originally from the small town of Ninety Six, South Carolina, Chris moved to the Lowcountry 11 years ago. He now lives with his wife, and two children.
Chris earned a degree in professional golf management from the Professional Golfers Career College in Hilton Head, and is working toward his full PGA Professional certification.
“It feels great to be back at Dataw Island after six years of being away,” Chris said. “I can't wait to reconnect with the membership and create new lifelong memories here at Dataw Island. I am really excited to help the members improve their golf game through clinics and instruction, but most of all help them enjoy the game more and being part of an incredible club.”
DIRECTOR OF GOLF MAINTENANCE
|
|
Brian Hollingsworth serves as the director of golf maintenance at the Dataw Island Club. His primary role is to direct the overall operation of the golf maintenance department through the preparation of budget and capital expenditures. Other responsibilities include facilitating member communications and public relations through articles written for club publications; actively participating in meetings, and speaking engagements for Dataw Island Golf Association (DIGA), Dataw Island Women’s Golf Association (DIWGA) and other club groups; forming long range plans for both of Dataw’s golf courses; ensuring environmental compliance with state and federal regulations; implementing the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program to achieve and maintain certified status; maintaining high standards of environmental awareness and ethics; and coordinating, planning and scheduling golf course work weekly with the superintendents who are responsible for implementing those plans.
Hollingsworth is a Class A member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Lowcountry Golf Course Superintendents Association, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and a certified pesticide applicator in South Carolina. Prior to joining the staff at Dataw Island in 2005, Hollingsworth worked at The Landings Club in Savannah, Ga., as the assistant superintendent for the Palmetto Course and was promoted to golf course superintendent at the Oakridge Course in February 2002. In January 2004, he was promoted to a 36-hole superintendent and moved back to The Landings Club to oversee a $2.4 million renovation of the Plantation Course.
Hollingsworth is a graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and soils. He also holds a master's degree from Auburn in turf grass management.
