GM Ted Bartlett honored by members
General Manager Ted Bartlett Honored with a Brick on the Dataw Heritage Walk: This week, a large contingent of members chose to honor General Manager Ted Bartlett with a permanent brick emblazoned with his name on the Dataw Heritage Walk. Upon suggestion of Joel Holden, members of 11 of the island’s most popular clubs on Dataw Island joined in the effort to thank Bartlett for his continued service. The group included members of the Croquet Club, Dataw Cares, Dataw Conservancy, Dataw Historic Foundation, DIGA, Dataw Island Quilters, DITA, DIWGA, DIYC, Garden Club, and VAC (and their numerous sub-clubs.)

“Ted Bartlett has dedicated himself to constantly improving Dataw Island,” said Holden. “It seemed right to honor him for his outstanding service.”

And, Holden said that when he sent his idea out by email to see if there was any interest, it became immediately apparent that he is in good company in appreciating Bartlett’s service. “Almost immediately I began receiving emails back saying ‘A resounding Yes!’ and ‘Of course!’ and ‘Why hasn’t anyone thought of this yet?’” Holden admitted he had the idea on his mind for some time, but with Bartlett coming up in January on his 11th anniversary of managing Dataw Island, the timing felt appropriate.

The Dataw Heritage Walk was started in 2009 as a fundraiser to permanently house our collection of artifacts and Dataw history, and it is located between the BB Sams Plantation Ruins and the Cannery parking area. The brick walk begins under an arbor of vines and serpentines toward the ruins. A careful observer will note the names of 200+ Dataw residents and employees and the years they first came to Dataw carved into bricks along the pathway – purchased either by themselves to celebrate their time here, or purchased by another person or group in honor of someone they collectively admire, as in the case of Bartlett.

During the open session portion of the DIC Board Meeting Monday, Holden surprised Bartlett with the dedication.

“I stood up and said, ‘There is an important correction to be made on Dataw, something is missing’” Holden said with a chuckle, explaining he could see Bartlett starting to look around in wonder of what this surprise problem may be. “Then I told him that a large group of residents are very enthusiastic about correcting this thing that is missing, and I presented the brick.”

“Thank you for this kind gesture, it is truly humbling” says Bartlett. “Dataw Island is really a special place, and nothing embodies that more than our members’ genuine appreciation for the service of staff. For your generous contributions at the holidays and sincerity you show throughout the year, thank you on behalf of all staff.”

Bricks are still available and cost $150 each; to dedicate one or purchase one for yourself, please contact Peter Pearks at (843)838-2506.
