The Mating Game: Spring arrives with the courtship of the great egret
The weather is starting to heat up in Beaufort and so is the birding at the Cypress Wetlands boardwalk in Port Royal. The Great Egret males have just started arriving to claim their nesting area and start the building process; they will be followed shortly by the females. Both sexes will be dressed in their nuptial plumage, the beautiful ornamental feathers that they were hunted nearly to extinction for in the late 1800’s.

Aggravated on the court? Try a smile and let it go!
At risk of turning into the TV commercial guy who needs a Snickers bar to be himself? Before you carb up, we have another approach you may want to consider. Quite often the #1 source of aggravation on the court is missing a shot and the rumblings that go along with it, however misplaced they may be. Even worse is the irritation when you opponent gets “that lucky shot” off from the back 1/8” of the line and your 40/30, and then comes back to scoop the game away from you. Think about this -- Who gave him or allowed him “that lucky shot”? And who stayed disengaged during the next two points to lose the game because they were overdosing on disappointment? When you can take responsibility for giving him that opportunity, you cannot be upset that he took advantage of the situation, as you would also have done just the same. Once you become aware of the circumstance and the outcome it produced, you will be less inclined to get negative and be able to stay in the moment when it counts. This is sure to add to your game score and fuel your confidence. We all make mistakes as we play and will continue to do so. Making less of them as time goes on should be the goal, not to eradicate them totally. Also, remember to smile. It is really hard to be mad and smile. At first this will really hurt, but it is sure to break the ice and may change your outlook if you continue the practice. Good luck with the new smiles, it should make things quite fun for the crowd.

Dataw's Cotton Dike Course Ranks in South Carolina's 50 Best Courses
Every two years, a panel of industry, media and golfing professionals, representing a diverse range of occupations, handicaps and backgrounds travel all over South Carolina identifying the best of the 474 golf courses. Rankings are derived from a number of factors including: - Routing – How the course flows from hole to hole in harmony with existing topography. - Variety – Degree to which the course demands a full range of shot requirements. - Strategy – How design features test course management. - Equity – The course’s capacity to reward good shots and penalize poor ones. - Memorability – The distinctiveness of the golf course and its individual holes. - Aesthetics – The degree to which scenery and surrounds lend to the enjoyment. - Experience – Incorporates all elements of the course: practice areas, clubhouse and more. The objective of the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel is to promote excellence in SC golf course design and operations through competitive rankings, education and public advocacy. The Panel serves as an ambassador for golf in South Carolina by striving to stimulate and facilitate the promotion and marketing of outstanding golf courses, resorts and real estate developments. To obtain a rating, Dataw Island was required to solicit 15 panel members to come out and play both the Cotton Dike and Morgan River courses – a deliberate process that has taken nearly two years to complete. “We reached out to the SC Golf Course Ratings Panel in 2014 and have been working ever since to try and achieve a ranking,” Ted Bartlett, Dataw Island General Manager said. Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike course is a recently renovated Tom Fazio design that has hosted the 2015 CGA Senior Amateur, the 2015 South Carolina Open and is slated to host the 2016 South Carolina Open this year, along with many other amateur and professional events. The course is lushly appointed with Live Oak trees, impeccable landscaping and stunning marsh views that give it a uniquely LowCountry feel. “Dataw was pleased to make the list at number 50 and looks forward to the chance to improve our ranking going forward,” Bartlett said. “Now that we have achieved a rating for Cotton Dike our hope is that we will be able to receive a rating for Morgan River as well.”
Fashion For Compassion to benefit FRIENDS of Caroline Hospice
Dataw Island happily welcomed Fashion For Compassion to benefit FRIENDS of Caroline Hospice today in the Carolina Ballroom. The Fashion Show is an annual sell-out event showcasing the latest fashions from Beaufort’s local shops and boutiques. Now in its 13th year, the lunchtime fundraiser featured a live auction, silent auction and entertainment by DJ Jesse from Gavigan Entertainment. This year’s theme was “The Secret Garden”, reflecting on home is where the heart is, and featured guest speaker Sarah Sanford Rauch. The money raised by this event will benefit FRIENDS of Caroline Hospice which has cared for generations of Beaufort County residents and is a pioneer in developing end-of-life care programming and services. The Mission of FRIENDS remains as it was in the beginning: to ease pain, anxiety, and other symptoms surrounding a terminal illness. ‪#‎CarolineHospice‬ ‪#‎GaviganEntertainment‬ ‪#‎JasminaKimova‬
Why more people are moving to Beaufort, South Carolina
It’s no secret that there are tons of people moving to Beaufort from places all over. You could probably take a street census and find that the number of transplants is staggering. In fact, moving to Beaufort is so common that it’s even being commercialized with such things as bumper stickers that say “Beaufort Native,” just so folks don’t get confused. There’s also a local saying, “I’m not from Beaufort…but I got here as quick as I could.”

What is Masters Tennis and What the HECK is Pickleball?
Masters Tennis may sounds like it would be reserved for seasoned champions (like the Master’s Tennis Tournament is for Roger Federer) but in reality it is almost the opposite. Masters Tennis is a new spin on the tennis game, using lower compression balls (which move slower) on a modified, smaller court (so there is less ground to cover). In other words, there is less court to cover and the ball speed is easier to keep up with. It first gained popularity in Florida and has quickly been migrating North.

Golf Divot Repair - Keep it playable!
Correctly fixing ball marks is the responsibility all golfers share. Ideally, everyone should try to fix their own ball mark, but if you see one that needs to be fixed – please fix two. If you would approach your ball from the same direction as your ball’s original flight – regardless of where you park your golf cart, it is often easier to see the ball mark and at the same time survey your putting line. There are two links provided that show different aspects of fixing ball marks. We found this very helpful video, which shows how to fix a ball mark using the newer pitch-mark repair tool we have in the Pro Shop, and thought we would share.

Croquet Should Be in the Olympics Now. Period.
First off, anyone that wants to debate the merit of croquet as a sport can turn around and walk right back out the door right now. Okay, now that we've cleared out the deadwood, let's roll. Mallethead doesn't see how you can count the one-year entry of croquet in the Olympics in 1900 (before switching to roque for the 1904 event) as a valid attempt to evaluate the sport before giving it the boot. Consider this excerpt from Wikipedia:* After the success of the 1896 Games, the Olympics entered a period of stagnation that threatened their survival. The Olympic Games held at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and the World's Fair at St. Louis in 1904 were side-shows. The Games at Paris did not have a stadium, however this was the first time women took part in the games. The St. Louis Games hosted 650 athletes, but 580 were from the United States. As the Croquet Association became more established in Great Britain throughout the last century, it seems like if the event could have stuck around until 1920 or so that Olympic history would have been quite different for croquet. In a just world, and based on the short shrift the sport received, the IOC would give croquet an exhibition for London 2012. It is the world capital for the sport -- why not take advantage of the opportunity? Not to mention that it would be a nice little nod to the history of the games. Nonsense you say? What about the question of popularity and "televisablity?" While the sport certainly has struggled to catch on, at least in America, virtually everyone has played croquet. So, most people actually are very familiar with the sport. They get the principle -- hit balls through wickets, go to the stake and win. With the advances in sports broadcasting, I think you can quickly get spectators up to speed on the sport -- especially golf croquet.** Compare that to curling which oddly captivated the world last winter, yet few have ever played the sport (to be honest, Mallethead has never even played shuffleboard -- bocce, yes). To be clear, the purpose here is not to denigrate any of the current sports. The idea is to simply compare to demonstrate that croquet does fit. And I think curling is a great example as it had a "tactical" element, that I know 90% of viewers could not comprehend. And that is, of course, one of the objections to croquet -- non-players can't comprehend what is happening. True, but as stated before, that didn't seem to factor in for curling, but to assuage that fear, I do think golf croquet is the starting point. At least from a spectator standpoint, it makes more sense. And what about this when making the case for croquet? Not only is it a sport that virtually everyone has played, it's also a sport that everyone can play. It's difficult to name many true sports that are more gender and age equal than croquet. Sure it's great to watch young people in their physical prime perform athletic marvels, but there is also something to be said for presenting a sp

Addressing the Ball: 5 Tips to Sharpen your Golf Game
How we address the ball is often the forgotten reason why our game can go sour. The important address position has several components, any one of which can lead to some mechanical problems in the swing if not dealt with correctly. Here’s a brief reminder of five of the most common ones. The grip: It’s our only contact with the golf club and probably has the greatest effect on the position of the clubface. A poor grip can also affect our ability to make our best swing. The stance: Our stance should be the width which will allow us to make an athletic and balanced swing. Having our feet spread equal to the width of our shoulders is a good starting point. The width of our stance can also be very important in our ability to turn our body as we swing the club. Too wide and we limit our turn; too narrow and we can spin out. The alignment: Find our target, then make sure our feet, hips and shoulders are aligned in a similar direction toward our target. The posture: Our posture can affect our balance as well as the path of which we swing our club. Think of the weight on our feet as being under the top of our shoelaces. A slight knee flex and a bend at the waist/hips will allow our arms to hang down from our shoulders in a relaxed position. This will help us make a more natural and comfortable swing. The ball position: This is the final address item on our checklist. Generally for full swings, the ball position for the short irons is in the middle of the stance and moves forward to the front heel/instep for the woods. Each player might find slight variations work better for their individual games. Here’s an interesting fact I read about a few years ago. When a pro tour player takes a lesson, 75% of the time the lesson revolves around the address position. If the best players in the world spend most of their time in this area, maybe we should too!
Outside Magazine Ranks Beaufort #8 of 16 'Best Places to Live in America for 2015'
Half the county surrounding Beaufort is water. Which means anglers and paddlers have the better part of a million acres to explore, from brackish inland rivers to Jurassic Park–looking salt marshes that separate the mainland from the barrier islands. That’s not counting the Atlantic Ocean, where sea kayakers can play with dolphins before beaching on the white sands of Hunting Island State Park. As for the city itself, think of a coastal Gone with the Wind. Giant live oaks, thick with Spanish moss, surround antebellum homes. Consider it a smaller, less expensive Charleston, with the same historic charm but a tenth of the population and slightly more affordable digs. (The median home value in Beaufort is $253,000.) Locals and visitors alike eat plenty of seafood, either fresh catch from markets like the Gay Fish Company or in the form of a shrimp burger from the Shrimp Shack. The oyster industry is picking up, too; get some of the super-briny gems from Lady’s Island Oyster Company. —G.A.

Selling Your Home Today - Seven Secrets for Selling Faster and Better
If you are contemplating putting your home on the market this spring, here are a few tips to help with your planning. Selling Secret #7: Price and market your home correctly. Interview Realtors and listen carefully to what they say. Check their price recommendation with other comparable properties in the area, to make sure that your house is being priced appropriately; if it is too high, other Realtors may hesitate to show it. Generally speaking, listings are at their hottest during the initial months on the market so you want to be priced correctly from the start. Also ask what your Realtor’s plan will be for marketing your home: Will they place it in the Multiple Listing Service right away or not? Will they try to generate traffic by running ads and other techniques? Is your Realtor accessible? Do they encourage other Realtors to show their listings (and vice versa) to give your home the maximum exposure possible?

Marsh Friends: The Periwinkle Snails
The Marsh Periwinkle is one of the most common and characteristic inhabitants of salt marshes along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts southward to central Florida and in the northern Gulf of Mexico to Texas. These whitish globular snails (approx.1 in.) are most commonly observed perched along the stems of Spartina in the mid to upper parts of the intertidal zone. The absence of Littorina in southern Florida re¬flects the replacement of Spartina by mangroves in that part of the state.

Spring Spruce Up: Tips for Painting Your Home
A new coat of paint can make your home—and you—glow with happiness. If you are considering selling, why not get it out of the way now so your time will be free for other repairs? As with most home projects, prepping is key and will guarantee the best results. Here are a few things from Angie’s List to think about beforehand: • After you receive approval, have the house powerwashed to remove mildew and dirt. You can’t paint on top of mildew. Painters may not be equipped or trained for this job, so question them carefully if they offer to do it. If you’re not confident, call a power-washing company that you trust. If you’re really handy, rent a professional
